the grooves of thomas white and pete williams aka natural rhythm, have been a mainstay in the sets of robsoul boss phil weeks for more than a decade. today he pays �tribute� with a special re-release of some of his favourites. born in a garage in the late 90�s, natural rhythm was a meeting of passionate musical minds. working together the pair sought to create their own style and sound, influenced by the tracks they were regularly spinning in their own dj sets across the country. creative sampling and their own raw beats, together with live instrumentation and regular guest vocalists, saw natural rhythm create a strong catalogue that, as we know, are still getting played today. with three albums and over 35 ep/single releases to their name, there more than enough music for label boss weeks to select from for the tribute ep. a tough job? of course. however, phil went straight for the four that never leave his box. leading the ep are the sun-drenched vocal vibes of �something big�, the title track of natural rhythm�s 1999 release on under the counter. our a2 is the lead track from 2001�s last call at the martini ranch ep, �chicago nights�, with its quaking bassline and disco dalliance. on the flip we�re treated to a choice selection from natural rhythm�s 1999 double album contrast in nature. first up with its celestial chimes and thumping kick is �smoldering island�, taken from the original part 1. closing the tribute release and taken from part 2 is the devilishly funky and suitably titled feelgood jam �energized�. we definitely are!

long-time london based friends and regular collaborators ethyl & flori have been foraying between the blurred lines of house and techno with releases on labels like secretsundaze, aim and fear of flying for the last 6 years - and with a glowing reputation under their belt, 2015 saw the duo launch their own imprint e&f records. this time however, their most recent venture is a release with london label mutual friend recordings and combines the duos talent with enigmatic label owners and friends of ours london party curators our mutual friend, their solo ep on brooklyns voodoo down records earlier this year was tipped by such luminaries as levon vincent and dj october.

rhythm büro is a new record label based out of kiev, ukraine started by dj and promoter igor glushko. the büro first began as a local party series organised by igor, alexander pavlenko (aka na nich, widely known in the drum�n�bass world as sunchase) and vera logdanidi (aka vero). since the party�s beginning in march 2015, rhythm büro has hosted such greats as zadig, abdulla rashim, etapp kyle, eric cloutier, woo york, artefakt, acronym, steve bicknell and actress all at different non-club warehouse-like locations around kiev. a peculiar aspect of the rhythm büro team�s objective has been to maintain secrecy about the exact location of the party until a day prior to the event, when ticket buyers are then informed about the location via text message or email. the label was started to be the logical and progressive extension to what rhythm büro has established itself to be locally: one of ukraine�s prominent techno initiatives. for the first release of the label, na nich and vero have contributed two joint-produced tracks that are to become their first publicly available material under their current aliases. while a1 leans itself to the soundscape that is more or less typical for rhythm büro parties: trippy, hypnotic and transportive techno, a2 hits the floor with refreshing zeal, bringing an electro-esque break-beat under deep and emotive synth layers. the b side contains two remixes of the title track, one of which is thoroughly tailored by the dutch-born-berlin-based-duo, artefakt (mostly known for their releases on delsin, prologue and field) as well as a strong and heady remix by semantica records� mastermind, svreca.

samuel walker aka deejay astral first emerged onto the scene in 2011 under the palace alias with a string of raw garage / house releases on dj haus� unknown to the unknown & hot haus imprints. in late 2015 he made the switch over to his astral moniker to take his production in a deeper direction, since his switch he has released on shall not fade, w&o street tracks and now steel city dance discs. astral�s infectious brand of playful club music is perfect for the dance floor.

it is very difficult to present david duriez without writing an encyclopedic tome as its influence on the house music in france was decisive. since its inception in 1992, david released over a hundred records under his name, tens under various pseudonyms, mainly on vinyls on the most renowned labels like 2020vision, ovum, systematic, pokerflat, f communication, under the counter, stickman, crosstown rebels, the end, etc .. (the list is long, see discogs.com to be convinced) and as many remixes for some of the greatest artists (think moby, dj sneak, gemini, dj hell, llorca, telex, random factor, johnny fiasco, paul johnson, jori hulkkonen, ralph lawson, random factor, kenny hawkes or mr.c). founder of the label brique rouge and a whole galaxy of other labels, he participated in the creation of internationally recognized labels such as robsoul with phil weeks, freak n chic with dan ghenacia (from apollonia) or rz muzik. at a time when david had federated online the cream of the house producers via a forum (far and long before social networks), ivan smagghe had nicknamed him -the producer of the producers.- , a true house music activist, but most of all david duriez is a devastating dancefloor dj, he did several tours around the world and played in some of the biggest clubs in the world between 1995 and 2010. truly one of the most important players in the french electro scene, david is back on tracks after a few years hyatus. but don t call it a comeback because he has never really gone awol, he has been watching the scene and now he s back in the studio. you can expect a (very) long serie of releases for 2016, you have been warned!

the activ-analog collective return under this name for the first time in 10 years with a blistering new ep on lisbon s assemble music. taken from group live jams which are mixed down and tweaked on the fly, these four tracks recall the explosive simplicity of daniel bell s output on accelerate, both a-side tracks all whacked-out acid and basslines cut through by razor sharp hats and claps. the b-side sees the addition of the same woozy pads that defined their venerated night shift eps from the late 90s, taking the mood far into the afterhours. hard but with a light touch, funky and clean - in one word, irresistible.

finish techno pioneer and dum records boss kimmo rapatti aka mono junk and melody boy 2000 is back with another fine ep of some of his greatest tracks. all three have been released before now, but never all together on the same ep. a1 sound stealer was released in 2007 under the melody boy 200 alias and since then has been hugely sought after, often fetching high prices on discogs. it is a high impact techno track with racing drums and chattery percussion that will take any floor by storm. a2 all alone, again as melody boy 2000, has only been released on cd before now, as part of a label compilation back in 2002. this one is deep and rubbery, spaced out and elastic and is full of moodiness and melody. both b-side tracks were written as mono junk and both were written in 1992. first up, apache acid came on vinyl own music man and is a face melting, hundred miler per hour banger with manic 303s buried within. finally, �beyond the darkness� was a key early techno track to come from finland and has previously been released on dum010. says the artist of the track, �an ensoniq asr-10 arrived on the market and studio engineer perttu bought it right away, but i never liked to use sounds that someone else had made. we sampled the track�s bassline, strings and others from my jx-3p separately and mixed it all together.� the result is an atmospheric track with swirling pads, icy synths and form drums that will make people march, no doubt.

nagamatzu were the british duo of andrew lagowski (seti, legion, terror against terror) on synths, guitar, and programming and stephen jarvis (pure motorised instinct, terraform) on synths and bass. formed in 1982 after messing around with old tape machines and drum boxes, making numerous contributions to international compilations and erratically releasing their own cassettes. their name comes from a character in jg ballard�s �atrocity exhibition� and their music reflects his influence. nagamatzu self-released their debut cassette �shatter days� in 1983 after messing around with old tape machines, drum boxes and effects.

melodie is cristi tudorache from bucharest, an artist who has made quite a name for himself through the 2 highly acclaimed releases on raresh s metereze and french label rora in 2015. this is his latest ep, alderaan, named after an extinct planet in star wars. alma01 includes the much sought-after acid saturday, the track that has had threads dedicated to it all over the web after rpr soundsystem played it at weather festival in 2015. the ep debuts the almanah label, a new romanian label under the curatorship of the origami sound / interval crew.

kevin saunderson, a driving force behind detroits rich musical heritage and lauded innovator of techno, returns to his own kms records to deliver another unstoppable club weapon under his e-dancer moniker - one nation. one nation begins its 6 minute journey with signature saunderson percussion and a pounding 4/4 flow that oozes peak-time energy. an eerie and funk tinged synth fills the space with an intoxicating refrain to keep feet stomping, which later trades centre-stage for a heavy and evolving bass line as the track continues on its path of ebbs and flows. this heater aptly demonstrates why kevin saunderson it still one of the hottest names in dance music. as suited for sweaty basements as it is festival main stages, one nation will surely feature in the bags of techno heavyweights for months to come.

what s in the du name? 030303 records asked three of their favourite prod ucers with matching names to du an ep together: ann harbour s d marc cantu and mark du mosh & paul du lac, both from the dutch harbour city rotterdam. the result is dynamite! a1-mine motion- is a monsterous jacker in the rawest form how only mr cantu can du! on the b side mark du mosh takes off with a flight to -bermuda- with a hot & steamy roaring electronic beast sitting on the wing of the plane and causing some heavy turbulence. fortunatly du mosh keeps us flying high with some deep emotional synths. last but not least paul du lac delivers a dark psychedelic techtool called -beta rhythm-. a track that creeps under your skin as a virus, causing some serious haziness from noding your head. be aware that this record will appear on vinyl only!

as until my heart stops turns 10, we head back across the atlantic , this time to boston and a stunning ep from the still hugely under rated deviere. deviere is a music producer and radio disc jockey (progressive black, 90.3 fm wzbc newton) based in boston, massachusetts. he first came to our attention with the transcendental numbers ep on jamal moss mathematics label in 2012 and we ve waited on each release ever since, including last year s huge future shock disco ep (a collaboration with jamal himself). here deviere presents 3 beautiful examples of his deep, soulful craft and a fitting way for umhs to hit double figures.
